#- Clinched Opening Round Bye
YESTERDAYS RECAP:
Marquette- 74
Syracuse- 71
Marquette, coming off a loss over the weekend, returned to the comfy confines of the Bradley Center to beat Syracuse. Both teams entered the game with 10-4 records in conference play, trying to stay in the top 4 in the standings to get a double bye. Syracuse jumped out to an early lead, extending it to as many as 11 in the 1st half. The Cuse also held Marquette to 42% shooting and 24% from 3-point range. However, the Golden Eagles out rebounded Syracuse by 4 and outscored them from the foul line 29-5. Marquette is now 15-0 at home this season and hosts Notre Dame Saturday. The Golden Eagles have all but secured a double bye in New York with the victory. Syracuse on the other hand is in a world of uncertainty. The Orange have now lost 5 of their last 9 and if they are not careful could find themselves out of the top 4 when the season concludes. Syracuse has 3 games remaining, 2 of which are against teams ahead of them in the standings. The Orange now have 5 conference losses and put themselves in position to get jumped in the standings over the final 2 weeks. Both Pitt and Villanova hold tiebreakers over Syracuse if it were to get to that point.
Seton Hall- 66
Villanova- 65Seton Hall pulled off the upset to get their 3rd win of the season in conference and snap a 9 game losing streak. Seton Hall is already slated to play on Tuesday in New York, so the result effected Villanova much more than the Pirates. With the loss Villanova all but assures that they will be playing on Wednesday in New York. What is more important for Nova is that they are a “bubble” team for the big tournament and losing to a team like Seton Hall doesn’t help at all. Villanova finishes the season with Pitt and Georgetown and will probably have to win at least 1 of those as well as a few games in New York to be getting some good news on Selection Sunday.
