YESTERDAYS RECAP:
UCONN- 73
Cincinnati- 66
The Huskies needed overtime to get a win, but with the help of Shabazz Napier scoring 11 of the Huskies 18 points in the extra frame, UCONN walked away with a home win.  The loss really hurts Cincinnati, who could have jumped back into the crowded middle of the pack in the Big East with a win.  Now the Bearcats find themselves as the current 9-seed with just 4 games remaining.  Cincinnati is 1 game back of Villanova, St. John’s and Pitt and 2 back of Notre Dame.  Cincinnati stays on the road when they go to South Bend to try to close that gap on the Irish Sunday afternoon.  UCONN is ineligible to play in New York, but they seem to be taking pride in playing the spoiler.  The Huskies still have games with 1st place Georgetown on the schedule, as well as a return game with Cincinnati next weekend.

YESTERDAYS RECAP:

Syracuse- 84
Providence- 59
The Orange took care of business at home Wednesday night against Providence and can now focus on Saturday’s showdown against Georgetown in a battle of 1st place teams.  The Orange also plays the other 1st place team, Marquette, just two days after their match-up with Georgetown.  Syracuse dominated this one from the opening tip.  Providence had their only lead of the game at 6-5 early on, from that point on the Cuse outscored the Friars 38-10 to close out the 1st half.  Syracuse won their 38th straight home game, which is the longest streak in the nation.  They will try to make it 39 straight on Saturday, when rival Georgetown comes to town 1 final time in Big East play.  Providence is playing to avoid Tuesday at this point.  The Friars take on Rutgers next, if they win Saturday they will get an opening round bye in the tournament.

Georgetown- 90
DePaul- 66
The Hoyas wasted no time dispatching DePaul Wednesday night.  Georgetown built a 14 point lead by halftime and cruised to an impressive 24 point win.  Georgetown, like Syracuse is now 10-3 in conference heading into Saturday’s game against each other.  The two teams will play each other twice in the last 2 weeks of the season, with the Georgetown hosting the season finale.  One concern for Georgetown will be the health status of Otto Porter, Jr. who left the game yesterday with an injured knee.  He did return after the initial injury, but was very limited after his return.  DePaul will once again be playing the opening day of the tournament this year, and if it like previous years, that will be the ONLY day the Blue Demons will be in action in New York.

St. John’s- 69
South Florida-54
The Johnnies snapped their 2 game losing streak with the win last night.  St. John’s finds themselves right in the middle of the pack in the Big East, but still has an outside shot at claiming the 4 seed and getting a 2-day bye in New York.  St. John’s will pretty much control their destiny however, as 3 of their final 4 games are against teams either tied or ahead of them in the standings.  Next up for St. John’s is Pitt, both teams will enter the game 8-6 in conference play.

YESTERDAYS RECAP:

Marquette- 67
Seton Hall- 46
Tied at the half, Marquette scored 40 in the second half and cruised to their 2nd straight win.  Marquette moves a half a game ahead of Syracuse and Georgetown for 1st place in the conference.  Marquette plays a second straight road game when they got to Philadelphia and play Villanova on Saturday.  A win against Nova would set up a 1st place showdown with Syracuse on Big Monday next week in Milwaukee.  Seton Hall needs to win out and have Providence lose the rest of their games to avoid playing on Tuesday in the Big East Tournament.

YESTERDAYS RECAP:
Notre Dame- 51
Pittsburgh- 42
Notre Dame is now 4-1 against ranked teams this season, but maybe more importantly is just 1 game out of the 4th seed after a 51-42 win in Pittsburgh yesterday.  The Irish started out sluggish making just 1 of their first 18 shots, but they cut a 16 point Pitt lead to just 3 at the half.  Notre Dame outscored Pitt 32-22 after the break.  Pitt shot 9-30 after taking a 19-3 lead in the 1st half, including go 0-8 from 3 point range.  Pitt has now dropped 2 straight games in league play and travel to New York to take on St. John’s Sunday afternoon.  Pitt is currently just a half a game ahead of the Johnnies.

Villanova- 71
Rutgers- 63
Villanova used a 50 point 2nd half to turn a 10 point halftime deficit into an 8 point home victory against the Scarlet Knights.  The Wildcats have now won 4 out of 5 and are tied with Pitt for the 6th seed in the Big East.  Pitt owns the tie breaker as of now, but Villanova still plays the Panthers again the first week in March.  Rutgers failed to score 70 for the 9th straight game and will have to beat Providence on Saturday if they hope to have any shot at not playing in the opening round of the Big East Tournament.
